Mercy Health St. Rita’s hospital contracted The JDI Group to re-imagine the interior spaces of Suites 255 and 150. The result accommodated the move of the PEDI Rehabilitation center and the restructuring of its Adult Outpatient Rehabilitation Center.
Suite 150 is 22,700 SF and was a more in-depth renovation, exploring new layout options to improve functionality and organization. The overall goal of this project was to improve the patient experience by creating a calm and healing atmosphere.
The design of this renovation provided a welcoming and cohesive space to reduce patient anxiety and stress. The original space struggled with department adjacencies, and the patient flow was inefficient and jumbled. Other issues included lack of storage space, which led to clutter and disorganization. The layout of the suite didn’t accommodate all patient needs: voice therapy rooms were spread out across the floor plan and disruptive to others, the driver simulation room was not adequately sized for function, and the open gym space didn’t allow for patient visibility. There was a challenge with the curved ramp entrance, which lacked a welcoming appearance and was confusing to navigate.
The JDI Group studied the space and developed a plan to relocate the patient waiting area for easier navigation and views to the open treatment area. All administrative function areas were consolidated, and the team created new “client bays” for clerical staff with ample storage. The voice therapy department was relocated to be grouped in one area where it wouldn’t be disruptive to others, and additional private treatment rooms were added with secured storage spaces. Our team created a new therapist office space with windows for viewing the therapy gym space. Individual storage lockers were added for personal belongings and group worktables for patient charting. The entrance ramp was renovated to create open sight lines and clear direction to the patient check-in window. Our finished ramp design was ADA accessible and included appropriate flooring and wall finish to sustain repeated abuse.
The beautiful transformation of Suite 150 achieved all overall goals and resolved all of the challenges that were being faced by the client.
