Terra State Community College - Elaine Denman Recktenwald Center

Originally designed for a different purpose, this facility was not intended to support the evolving needs of modern athletic programs and student activities. To better serve athletes and enhance the student experience, JDI led a comprehensive renovation to transform the building into a dynamic, multifunctional athletic facility.

Project Enhancements
Athletic & Training Spaces Designed dedicated workout areas, locker rooms, and training spaces to support student-athletes’ needs.
Concessions & Ancillary Spaces Integrated concession areas, laundry facilities, and other essential support spaces to improve functionality.
Interior Upgrades Updated finishes to create a more inviting and welcoming environment, helping to retain current students and attract new athletes.
Technology & Event Enhancements Provided electrical and equipment specifications for a state-of-the-art projector system, including specialized projection paint to modernize commencement ceremonies and other events.
Optimized Storage Solutions Designed efficient storage areas to better organize and streamline facility operations.

Through strategic modernization and thoughtful design, The JDI Group helped redefine the facility, ensuring it meets the evolving demands of athletics, student engagement, and special events.

The Terra College Foundation received a $600,000 gift from Frederick W. Recktenwald in memory of his late wife, Elaine Denman Recktenwald, that provided the significant capital improvements and renovations to this space. In addition to the major gift fund, the college utilized State of Ohio capital funding.

The activities center space serves 15,000 people, hosting a wide range of college and community events, including Terra State Titan Athletics, commencement, concerts, job fairs, industry and manufacturing events, robotics competitions, and more.
The ultimate goal was to create a long-standing community resource to be used by students, nonprofit organizations, business and industry partners for years to come. The construction was completed and the grand opening of the space took place in May 2025.
