Bridge Replacement

Replacing outdated bridges has been at the forefront of not only the Ohio Department of Transportation, but many Ohio counties as well. the jdi group, Inc. has worked in a design-build capacity with several construction companies on the replacement of some of these structures.

A structurally deficient bridge, located on Liberty Street in Garrettsville, Ohio, was one such project. The bridge spans Eagle Creek, and was a 51’ single span steel truss structure. The new bridge is a 62.5’ single span, pre-stressed composite box beam with reinforced concrete deck. Included in the project were improvements to the approaches, which encompassed full-depth pavement replacement, and new curbs and walkways; load rating analysis; and innovative deck joist design. Maintenance of traffic and the coordination of the design and schedule with several utility companies, the Portage County Engineer, the Village of Garrettsville, and the local school district were also part of our scope of work. The project was successfully completed within a tight timeframe.

jdi also worked on bridge replacement projects in Huron and Sandusky Counties. In Huron County, a single span, 53’, concrete box beam bridge replaced the existing 46’ steel truss bridge over the east branch of the Huron River. The new bridge is supported on shaft cap pile abutments. The Sandusky County project involved the replacement of the South Street Bridge over Raccoon Creek. The existing 22’ single span, pre-stressed, concrete box beam structure was replaced with a 28’ span with pre-cast 3-sided flat box beam culvert with pre-cast wing walls and head wall. Completed for ODOT, our scope of work on these projects included improvements to the roadway approaches, utility coordination, and maintenance of traffic.
